Research Interests: environmental shocks, environmental risk, international development

Frederik’s research focuses on the interplay of economic development and living resources such as fish and forests.  He applies both theory and empirical methods to examining complex socio-ecological problems. His recent research focuses on the insurance value of natural ecosystems and biodiversity for rural households in developing countries. Frederik hails from Germany, where he received a Master’s degree (Diplom) in Landscape Ecology from the University of Greifswald, and a PhD (Doktor) in Economics from the University of Kiel.  He has collaborated with The World Bank, Center for International Forestry Research, and other organizations on research around the globe, including studies in Azerbaijan, Brazil, India, Iran, Malaysia and Uganda.
